Moss Art: A New Voice in Contemporary Craft, Celebrated at Collect 2025

Writer: NinfaStudioNinfaStudio

Collect 2025 marked a significant turning point, a moment where moss art stepped into the spotlight of contemporary craft and design. This year, for the first time, this unique medium was presented at the prestigious international fair, and the response was truly remarkable.

The Irish Gallery Exhibition

As part of a select group of fourteen artists and makers chosen by the Design & Crafts Council Ireland to represent the nation at Collect 2025, the moss art piece "Grounded Perspectives" achieved an exceptional debut. This carefully crafted work, part of Ninfa Studio's Organic Moss Art Collection and handcrafted with a variety of preserved mosses and amaranth plants resonated deeply with both attendees and critics, establishing moss art as a recognized artistic medium.

The recognitions

The significance of this introduction was further enhanced by the recognition from leading design magazines. The World of Interiors selected Ninfa Studio's work as their top 20 favourite pieces at Collect 2025, while Wallpaper* highlighted the piece as a standout artwork of the fair describing the piece as "woven silk in the hands of self-taught artist Paola Di Legge", a testament to Ninfa Studio's moss art as a compelling presence among diverse contemporary crafts.

The Craftmanship

The success at Collect 2025 also highlighted the vital role of craftsmanship. Each piece of moss art reflects the artist's dedication to detail, a meticulous process of layering textures and forms to evoke the essence of the natural world. This craftsmanship transforms natural materials into works that exist at the intersection of art, craft, and design.

In an era increasingly focused on sustainability and a desire for connection with nature, moss art has found its voice. “Grounded Perspective” is an exploration of textures and forms inspired by the intricate beauty of the natural world, in particular the Irish landscape. This piece is all about shifting our viewpoints, finding peace in the details, and reconnecting with the earth beneath our feet.

These grounding aspects resonate deeply with contemporary audiences who seek art that is both aesthetically pleasing and evokes a sense of connection.

What these recognitions mean for Moss Art

The incredible reception at Collect 2025 and the subsequent features in leading design publications have positioned moss art as a thriving and influential medium, broadening its appeal and inspiring a new chapter of artistic exploration.

These appreciations represent a pivotal moment for moss art as they recognize the creative potential of natural materials, in particular an often overlooked organic element like moss as a respected form of artistic expression, elevating the medium from a niche craft to an innovative artistic form that speaks to contemporary sensibilities.
